Fleischauer, League of Women Voters to receive human rights recognition

MORGANTOWN — Delegate Barbara Evans Fleischauer, D-Monongalia, and the Morgantown/Monongalia County League of Women Voters will be recognized during Tuesday’s Morgantown City Council meeting by the city’s human rights commission.
Fleischauer was recently named the individual recipient and the league of women voters the group/organization recipient of the Morgantown Human Rights Commission’s annual awards, presented in conjunction with Human Rights Day, which was Dec. 10.
Jan Derry chairs the commission. She said both recipients are more than deserving of the recognition.
“Delegate Fleischauer is really looking out for the underdog,” Derry said. “When it comes to human rights, she’s working diligently to help fight human trafficking, securing equal wages for women, equality in the court system and a number of other issues. She has been someone who has really fostered civil and human rights for our local community members.”
Derry went on to say that the league  of women voters plays a critical role in keeping voters informed and engaged.
“That’s primarily why they were chosen. They’ve been doing this a long time and they provide all sorts of community-based opportunities to inform voters and get out the vote,” Derry said. “They’re non-partisan and they work very hard to allow voters to make informed choices and decisions.”
Following the presentation of the awards, a program will be held at the Aull Center, located at 351 Spruce Street. The community is invited to the event, which will feature remarks from Meshea Poore, vice president for the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at WVU.
Dec. 10 marked the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948.
