WVU roundup: Carter named to coaches’ Honors Court

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Former WVU basketball star Jevon Carter (sport management) was named July 17 as a member of the The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court, recognizing those men’s collegiate players who excelled in academics last season.
The qualifications:
1. Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player.
2. Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of
3.2 or higher at the end of the 2017-’18 academic year.
3. Must have matriculated at least one year at his current institution.
4. Member of an NCAA Division I, II or III or NAIA Division I or II institution with an NABC member coach.
— For the second straight year, the WVU volleyball team was named as a recipient of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award.
The Mountaineers were one of 163 Division I programs honored.
“I’m proud of our girls and their consistency in the classroom,” WVU coach Reed Sunahara said. He also thanked Stephanie White, assistant athletic director of Student-Athlete Development, and her staff “for guiding our players through a demanding schedule, both on and off the court. They’ve worked hard to get where they are today, and I’m very proud of them.”
Six Mountaineers were named to the 2017 Big 12 all-academic team, while senior libero Gianna Gotterba earned the Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, the league’s highest academic honor. All six freshmen were named to the Big 12 academic all-rookie team.
The AVCA award honors collegiate and high school teams that maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
