WVU, Fairmont State swim teams honored for academics

MORGANTOWN — The WVU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were named Scholar All-America Teams by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for their academic performance during the spring semester.
For the 21st consecutive semester, the Mountaineers women’s team earned the national honor, this time by recording a cumulative grade-point average of 3.46. The WVU men earned a 3.12 GPA and received the accolade for the third time in the last four semesters.
Each participating Big 12 Conference swimming and diving program was named to the Scholar All-American Teams in the spring semester. The conference is one of four nationally to have all teams accomplish the feat.
The award, presented twice a year, recognizes college and university swimming and diving teams who achieved a cumulative semester GPA of 3.0 or higher.
In all, 710 teams from 476 schools were named to the spring list.
Head coach Patrick Snively’s women’s swim team earned CSCAA academic honors for the spring semester, as announced by the association’s awards committee.
In addition to being crowned the 2018 Mountain East Conference champion in the sport, FSU compiled a team GPA of 3.46.
FSU also was the only team in the league to have an All-American — Marlena Dudek took fifth in the 200 breaststroke at the NCAA meet.
The Falcons also swept the MEC postseason awards, with Dudek earning swimmer of the year, Courtney Deem (from Morgantown) earning freshman of the year and Snively earning coach of the year.
Three FSU women’s swimmers earned MEC all-academic team honors with GPAs of 3.70 or higher during the spring: Maddy Beekler, Sabrina Buhagiar and Alexis Rowe, from Morgantown.
Becka Crandall, Sierra Wright and Deem were named to the MEC Commissioner’s Honor Roll for having GPAs between 3.25 and 3.69.
