Cassville School Alumni Association prepares for reunion

MORGANTOWN — Do you have trouble staying connected with former classmates or loved ones?
Probably.
Are there stories you wish you could discuss with others, but most wouldn’t understand them unless you attended the same school?
Most definitely.
Since the closing of Cassville Junior High School, the Cassville School Alumni Association, which consists of former classmates and local residents, continues to stay in contact with one another.
Cassville Junior High School’s was in existence from 1923-’83, until they later consolidated with Osage and became Cass District Junior High School.
The first committee meeting was held in 1998. Since then, the committee meets every other year to discuss ways to stay in contact with other alums, as well as ways to contribute to the community.
As the association prepares for their upcoming class reunion, the committee and residents reminisce on how the association was formed.
“We were cooking dinner for a funeral at the church, and we had mentioned about wanting to have a school reunion. After we left, one lady went home and called the Mason Dixon Park and said we’re having a reunion,” said Ilene Shahan, one of the original founders of the association.
“We didn’t have money to do anything, yet we still had the first one up there.”
Once word got out, storms of people flooded the park. It was such a big deal that there were attendees who moved out of state and made the trip back.
“There were so many people there that we had rented a small pavilion, and the only thing that would fit in it was the food,” committee member, Debbie Blehschmidt said. This offers a way to interact with loved ones, while cooking out and reminiscing on fun times everyone had together.
