Smith’s RBI single a clutch hit to lead Post 2 past Cumberland

MORGANTOWN — Quintin Smith looked pretty natural swinging a wooden bat Sunday June 10.
The shortstop for the Morgantown Post 2 American Legion baseball team went 3-for-4, including the go-ahead single in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead Post 2 to a 4-3 victory against Cumberland (Md.), at Mylan Park.
“He had a great game,” Post 2 manager Tyler Barnette said. “You really couldn’t have asked for much more.”
Morgantown (6-1) went 4-1 during the round-robin format and have now won four consecutive games.
Smith led the way with three of Morgantown’s six hits and Cam Stoldt pitched a complete game to pick up his second win of the season.
Cumberland scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game, 3-3.
Morgantown won it in the bottom of the sixth with Smith’s clutch two-out hitting.
After Ethan Smith was struck out to start the sixth for Post 2, Clay Maholic was hit by a pitch and Chandler Watts reached on an error.
Colton Matthews reached on a fielder’s choice that forced Maholic out at third, but a throwing error allowed Watts to reach third and Matthews advanced to second.
That brought up Smith, who singled to right field to score Watts for the go-ahead score.
Stoldt made it stick by shtting Cumberland down in the seventh inning.
Over seven innings, Stoldt allowed six hits and only two of his three runs allowed were earned. He struck out six and walked none.
Post 2 will ravel to Elkins on Thursday June 14 for the start of the Hillbilly Hardball Classic.
