ACCA hosts annual Morgantown Migratory Bird Day

MORGANTOWN — On Saturday, the Avian Conservation Center of Appalachia (ACCA) held the 7th Annual Morgantown Migratory Bird Day celebration at Cooper’s Rock State Forest.
The event began with a guided bird walk on the Raven Rock Trail. More than 40 bird watchers attended the walk and were excited to see cerulean, Blackburnian, and bay-breasted warblers, along with other resident and migratory bird species.
West Virginia is home to more nesting cerulean warblers and wood thrush than any other state; both are migratory species that spend the winters in the tropics and the summers in North America.
The celebration also featured live raptor presentations with five birds of prey that reside permanently at the ACCA, and kids enjoyed bird-themed arts and crafts as well as owl-pellet dissection. Children also participated in a “Bird Bingo” walk, where they identified birds near the pavilions and overlook area.
Morgantown Migratory Bird Day is the local celebration of World Migratory Bird Day, which is celebrated by parks, zoos, and nature centers around the world. The ACCA is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving the region’s wild birds through research, education, and rehabilitation.
Located on the same property as Cheat Lake Animal Hospital, the ACCA works to rehabilitate injured or displaced wild birds.
