WVU roundup: Tennis team meets TCU in Big 12 tourney

AUSTIN, Texas — The WVU tennis team takes on TCU on April 26, in the first round of the Big 12 tournament.
It will be a quick rematch. TCU beat WVU, 4-0, on Sunday.
“It’s exciting that we are playing TCU again,” WVU coach Miha Lisac said. “It’s a unique situation where we will play them twice in a span of five days. It provides a great opportunity for us to learn from the first match and apply those lessons to this match-up.”
TCU finished the regular season with a 12-13 overall record and a 2-7 mark in Big 12 play. Marie Norris leads the Horned Frogs with a 14-5 singles record.
For the Mountaineers (7-13, 1-8), senior Lyn Yuen Choo and freshman Giovanna Caputo have eight wins apiece. The doubles pair of Choo and Paula Goetz paces the Mountaineers with nine wins.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Redshirt seniors Amy Cashin and Maggie Drazba and redshirt freshman Sarah Wills will compete in the Penn Relays today.
“It’s a very difficult time of the year with final exams and graduation, so what we’ve done is try our best to keep kids in school as long as they can this week but still not sacrifice great competition for them,” WVU coach Sean Cleary said.
The oldest track and field competition in the country has been hosted by Penn every year since 1895. The meet also is one of the biggest in the United States, with over 200 colleges set to participate.
WVU 11, Marshall 10: CHARLESTON — In a back-and-forth battle that featured seven lead changes, the Mountaineers defeated the Herd in 13 innings late Tuesday.
On a rainy evening at Appalachian Power Park, WVU (20-18) and Marshall (17-21) scored runs in nine of the first 15 half innings before going scoreless in the next nine half innings, from the bottom of the eighth to the bottom of the 12th.
In a 10-10 game, WVU broke through with an RBI single in the top of the 13th off the bat of junior second baseman Kyle Gray.
“I’d stay out here all night if I have to to win a game, and I thought we were going to have to for a while,” WVU coach Randy Mazey said. “That’s one of the ugliest games you’ll ever see two teams play. I think there were 21 walks between the two teams, eight errors, multiple hit by pitches. It’s not a great game, but it’s really hard to win an extra-inning game on the road. It’s really hard to do, so when you do that, somebody has to do something really well.”
WVU scored its 11 runs on 15 hits, while Marshall scored 10 runs on 12 hits. Each team committed four errors. WVU stranded 13 runners and Marshall left 17 on.
Gray had a team-best four RBIs with two hits, including his seventh home run of the season and 10th of his career. Junior right fielder Darius Hill also homered, his fourth of the year and 11th of his career, and had two hits and an RBI with a pair of runs scored.
Gray (15 games) and Hill (14) extended their career-long hit streaks, while Gray (16), junior left fielder Braden Zarbnisky (15), Hill (14) and sophomore first baseman Marques Inman (13) also extended their career-long reached-base streaks in the contest.
On the mound, sophomore right-hander Alek Manoah pitched three scoreless innings in relief to earn the win.
WVU hosts No. 19 Texas at Monongalia County Ballpark from Friday-Sunday. The game times are 6:30 p.m., 4 p.m. and 1 p.m.
